Nature Inspired Thermomechanical Treatment to Investigate the Mechanical Properties of AISI 1040

Strengthening of metals as a function metal working and thermal treatment is being utilized effectively in steel structures. Effect on strength beyond thermomechanical has been the focus this research by imprinting nature inspired pattern one side sheet metal. Pangolin scale overlapped AISI 1040 while preserving its base treatment. Microstructure, impact toughness, hardness, tensile with notch opposite to worked was investigated after forging post heat-treatment. After heating at 800°C, overlapping patterned done two plates then subsequently cooled ways, air cooled, water quenched. To analyze effect heat treatment, Charpy impact, UTS, hardness tests, metallography were carried out treated (forged + quenched), untreated cooled) (as received) specimens. The Room temperature test showed that specimen highest toughness 120 J heat-treated specimen, 44 60 respectively. an increase macro micro than for Whereas UTS dropped specimens compared because load applied uniformly throughout so stress concentrations unforged higher which forged patterns.
